I never imagined I would start a blog (mostly because there's not enough hours in the day) andthen I realized how truly important it is to connect with people that I meet every day. This may be through a like or an add or a handshake on the street but I would like to believe it is still an interaction. I'm teaching my children that every person matters and I truly believe that - so, I'm starting this blog! Some of you may be past clients so HELLO AGAIN! Thank you so much for stopping by. Some of you may be meeting me for the first time-and that is just as special!
Something I have learned over the last four years is that my business is as much about what I sell and design as it is about me and the people like me! (I feel like I’m starting the first day of high school every time I meet a prospective client!)
And now (big shocker) here's my story:
I went to school for media studies, communications and image arts at the University of Guelph-Humber. I also took extended education courses at Ryerson University in Graphic Design. Throughout this entire time, I interned at 6 different places including a top advertising agency, with a fashion designer and at a creative PR agency. Following university, I continued to intern and landed a job at a corporate marketing agency. I worked 12-18 hours a day mostly behind a desk with my cell phone attached to me. My favourite part of the job was actually meeting clients- which happened rarely because I was a coordinator. I always said I never wanted to be a slave to a 9-5 but really, what else was I supposed to do!? Start my own business? At 21 that seemed like a far off dream so I continued to grind and started doing branding design for friends and family in my spare time.
Fast forward to 2011…
I was getting married and decided to design my own invitations and every single
element for my wedding. I thought, maybe I could be a wedding planner!
However, I didn’t think I could deal with the pressure of making or breaking someone's day- planning my own was fun because I knew I would marry the man I loved when all the insanity was over!
Designing my invitations also gave me the idea for Lovely Little Design Co. I designed 60 suites for myself ( yes you heard correctly, which is why I allow brides to make so many changes at no cost - we're all a bit nuts at that point in our lives).
Anyways, I had my first son after we were married and I realized I needed to stay home ( I could not leave him, ever! And that was okay with me and my husband). I had worked all these great jobs that allowed me to design but also that kept me behind a desk and stressed out! Those jobs were not my bliss. I'm not someone that thinks you need to be
happy every day, but I wasn't happy at all!
So I decided I would take what I had in my head and put it into adobe illustrator and then came Lovely Little Paper Co. My first logo was something I would never do today but at the time, this is what I felt reflected me best!
I had no Idea what I was doing, I just started and slowly the clients came (thank you to those who were my first).
My first son Hudson refused to sleep most of the time and I thought I was losing my mind! At one point I was hallucinating I was so tired! I breast fed or bottle fed him at all
hours of the night with one hand (sometimes my chin) while working on my computer. I was always the person that needed 12 hours of sleep a night but became the person that could run on 4 hours and be fantastic! (We really
don't know how far we can go until we try.)
I had another son when by first baby was only 363 days old and my third son
when my second was a year and a half (We had a hard time conceiving the first and the next two came so easy! Maybe to easy!) I now have 3 boys! Hudson is 3.5, Dawson is 2.5 and Pax (Paxton) is 1.
I feel like the last 3 years have been a total blur and yet somehow I made it through!
I never knew I was the kind of person that would want to own their own business but the satisfaction I get from connecting with clients every day and making them happy: whether it be designing their dream invitations or helping them launch their business.
I love my boys more than anything in the world and they always come first, Lovely Little Design Co. is just as much an extension of myself as my children are and I am so grateful to get to spend every day with my boys (although, I often call in re-enforcements!)
I work my butt off every day, waking up at 4:30am (5 am is sleeping in for me) so I can get a jump on my day. My babies wake up and everything starts rolling really quickly.
I’m so grateful you are here reading my blog and I plan to give you insight into my business, my life and tips on branding and weddings that will help you along your journey as well.
I'm thinking the next post will be on "work life balance" (I put in in quotes because I feel like there is no such thing!) I do my best, but it is definitely the unicorn in my life. When people ask me how/why I do what I do every day I usually reply it's because I'm crazy...which I am, but that's not true...
Until next time...
